Noteworthy: Team filled with youth and experience that is being challenge by a very difficult schedule following the Lancers’ tradition of playing the best to be among the best. The Lancers’ schedule includes the La Jolla Country Day School Sweet 16 Invitational in San Diego, Hoophall West Invitational in Scottsdale and the Nike Tournament of Champions in Mesa before Christmas break. The difficult slate has contributed to Salpointe’s 6-6 start. … Three starters return from last year’s championship team — Bria Medina, Taliyah Henderson and Hannah Williams. Medina is a coach on the court and Henderson and Williams are two of the top Class of 2025 prospects in the state. … Six players from last year’s team, including captain Kylee Callahan, have graduated. … Sophomore guard Jolee Nelson is out for the season with a torn ACL. … Former Amphi boys basketball coach Ben Hurley is one Luevano’s assistant coaches with his daughter Caitlin Hurley a freshman on the team. Coach’s comments: “For our program it has always been about the team. We don’t concern ourselves with stats or with individual accolades. This group wants to be challenged and they know that in the biggest challenges they need each other. It’s early in the season but they are quickly finding a rhythm and learning to fight for every possession. They showed incredible mental and physical toughness in San Diego (in early December) against four high-quality programs (2-2 record vs. Desert Vista, Mission Hills, Seton Catholic and Mater Dei). I am excited to see them reach their potential.”
